fashion week trends ss22

A few short weeks ago, the weather teased us with a taster of long, warm days and plenty of rays, and everyone got a little bit excited. It was time to ditch the boots and oversized coats, favouring flip-flops and vest tops. Then to ruin the mood, mother nature sent the mercury plummeting, and we were plunged back into the depths of winter.

But, keep the faith! Spring is coming, and summer won’t be far behind, so while waiting for the sun to return, why not plan your fabulous warm-weather wardrobe with trends inspired by spring and summer fashion weeks.

Perfect pleats

As the models sashayed down the runways, plenty of pleats were on show. The pleated skirt is a must-have staple for your wardrobe this season. Of course, the favourite was the ankle-skimming skirt that worked with so many looks that we couldn’t fail to be inspired, but if this length isn’t your thing, the tennis style shorty is an option. There are no hard and fast rules on colour or material - they showcase them all. Plain, monochrome, patterned and stripes, you name it, everything goes.

Low waists

It seems this is the season to ditch the high-waist and instead go for the low-slung option. Be brave and bare that midriff, so there is no room to be shy with this one. If you are not happy to show off the tummy, then you may avoid this trend, but seriously, most people can pull this off well. Add a crop top with your low-slung waist to complete the look.

So sheer

If you want to keep on-trend, you will also need some sheer fabric pieces for summer. We saw sheer head to toe or as an accent. So you cannot go wrong, whatever option you choose. Many catwalk designers pushed the boundaries of modesty, but that is easily overcome with clever layering. Sheer is the perfect way to accentuate your silhouette. So, get creative with your layers and create some on-trend looks perfect for the sunshine.

Magically metallic

Gold and silver made an impact, and this year, instead of shimmering in sequins, we are looking for soft and shiny metallic fabrics with a drape to die for. The movement that a full gold skirt creates is mesmerising, and this is an easy look to replicate. Some designers combined the shimmer with the pleat for serious floaty movement, and the results were stunning. Head to toe is silver or gold can never be wrong this season.

Sensational suits

white suit trend

The female suit is sharp and powerful, and this season it can only be one colour - white. It takes power dressing to a new high and is the perfect return to the office look. The suit should be all white, but you can splash the colour with red heels, a statement bright trenchcoat or a handbag that pops next to the crisp finish.

Micro mini

If you aren’t a fan of the tennis skirt but like the mini, then this is the season to go micro. Stun with bold geometrics or bold colours. There is no wrong answer here. Team with heels, flats or boots, but keep the boots under the knee to showcase that mini in full effect.

Clingy cut-outs

Another flesh-baring trend this season is the gorgeous cut-out. Seen primarily on evening dresses, the cut-out panels expose the ribs, chest, back or stomach, so you can find the look that makes you feel confident. The look was showcased in block colour dresses of black and white, with satin and materials that move well were favoured by all designers for this look.

Oversized bags

Another must-have addition this season is the oversized bag. It is time to kiss the micro bag goodbye and consign it to the back of the wardrobe for another year. This is good news as tiny bags don’t fit the amount of stuff we need to carry with us. Colour and style once more fall to you and prove that the season’s takeaway is that pretty much anything goes.

Sustainable fashion

While sustainable fashion isn’t a trend per se, slowing down buying habits in favour of shopping consciously is a positive step forward. To help you achieve this, recycling, reworking and making your own garments is the way forward.

There are so many trends you can recreate with some creative thinking. So, check out our selection of fabrics to make something totally unique and on-trend.
