Leaving home with everything you need, your keys, phone, mask, lippy, and the million and one other things means carrying a bag makes the most sense. Some people have an extensive shoe collection - for others, it is all about bags!

handbag trends

Over the last decade, bag styles have changed, and these trends continue to evolve with time. We have seen an increase in size. Generally, because we seem to carry more stuff! Plus, there are also some very popular and traditional bag styles that never go out of fashion.

Check out some favourites over the last decade, and see what’s topping bag trends in 2022.

The basic handbag

The simple single strap, over one shoulder handbag is a practical and fuss-free solution that never loses popularity. Over the last ten years, we have seen a lot of new and bold patterns appearing, as well as metal logos and trims adding a chunky designer statement.

Looking back to 2014, we can see it was all about the duffel bag. This style of bag has always been a much-loved addition to the wardrobe, offering valuable space for the plethora of things we carry with us. However, by 2018 it was starting to slip down the charts, being replaced by both the bucket bag and crossbody styling.

The crossbody bag

One style that comes in a vast range of sizes with the singular commonality of the strap across the body is the much-loved crossbody bag. These have a safety element if you are shopping in a busy high street, as they are much harder for thieves to snatch when compared to the handbag over one shoulder.

Back in 2011, there was not a huge interest in this practical carryall, but by 2021 they were ranking high in the charts as one of the most popular bag stylings on the market. It is helped by the fact that, as long as the strap is long enough to cross the body, the bag itself can be many shapes and sizes and styled in a variety of ways.

The backpack

Wearing your bag on your back gives a hands-free experience and means an even distribution of weight if you happen to be carrying a heavy load. Both handbags and crossbody bags can pull on the spine or hips, but the theory with the backpack is that you stand straighter, and the weight does not affect posture.

The micro backpack found favour in 2010/2011, but it was not practical, as you couldn’t carry as much. The rucksack styling was sent stratospheric with brands such as Hype and Smiggle appealing to the school bag carrying population. However, there was an increase in the adult customer who found these designs perfect for modern lifestyles. The backpack has space for laptops and tablets and everything you need for daily life making them ideal for the hybrid office/home worker.

The wrist bag

The wrist bag has a short handle, sometimes made from chunky plastic hoops. While it’s not practical for everyday accessorizing, it’s ideal for date night and formal soirées. This style of bag has always found its place in the mid charts and, to be fair, there is enough room for everything you need. Some short handle bags also have a conversion strap to turn them into a cross body or handbag, making them slightly more popular in 2019 and beyond.

The clutch

When all you need is the wallet, phone, keys, and lippy, the clutch is the perfect date night bag. Easy to slip under your arm, they look cute and sit on the table. During the last ten years, the clutch remained popular in many formal wallets to playful pouches. Not so much space for heading to the office or gym, but they certainly have a lasting place in our hearts.

Another focus is texture, with tactile fabrics forming a large part of bag trends. Plus, there is always a place for the classic leather handbag. But again, expect these to be in bright colours, with many designers opting for softer leathers to create the perfect look.
