What is lining fabric?

Lining fabric forms an integral part of clothing and curtain sewing creations. For garments, it provides a protective layer and often makes materials more comfortable to wear. Alternatively for curtains, the lining fabric offers an extra barrier to stop light from coming in. Lining fabric is made with various materials, including natural and synthetic fibres.

How to choose the best lining fabric?

Selecting a suitable lining fabric depends on how you intend to use it. In clothing patterns, choosing a material that is soft, absorbent and anti-static is ideal. This ensures the fabric balances body temperature and doesn’t cling to your skin.

When making curtains, opaque fabrics are a great option. This stops light from seeping through and protects the main fabric from UV exposure.

Caring for lining fabric

Lining fabric is often different from the main garment. For example, a wool jacket may have a soft polyester lining. So, it’s important to wash and care for the overall piece according to its most delicate fabric.

Most lining fabrics should be washed at lower temperatures and ironed on a cooler setting. Otherwise, you run the risk of shrinkage, which could affect the structure of the clothing.

Lining fabric options

From animal print to striking bold colours, there is a range of lining fabrics suitable for all sewing projects. The selection of materials also provides different textures and looks for clothing and curtains.
